On Being Successful

Career advice from Dilbert’s Scott Adams:

But if you want something extraordinary, you have two paths:

  1. Become the best at one specific thing.
  2. Become very good (top 25%) at two or more things.

The first strategy is difficult to the point of near impossibility.

Business advice from Chase Jarvis:

- from this interview (about 41 minutes in)

Chase studies the photography landscape hunting for photos, not with the pack, but where the pack isn’t. It is this approach that led to his innovative portfolio and his continued success.

Regarding your smart post here, I can’t emphasize the point enough. As creatives, we should all be surveying the landscape and educating our palate…what is new, tired, old, original, ugly, fugly, or worse, boring and safe! Without risk comes no reward. And if you’re looking for other advice on how to stand out from the pack, you don’t have to go far - check out Seth Godin’s words. For him (and me), it’s ALL about separating yourself from the crowd by doing something unique.
